Apparently one of my posts is currently the top result on Google for:

2008 ghostdoc change keyboard shortcut

Unfortunately the referenced post doesn't actually specify how to change the shortcut. So in the interests of serving the great web browsing public I shall now explain how to do so. Of course you could just look in the Ghostdoc help but that would be logical and entirely non-geeklike.

The secret (such as it is) is to use the Visual Studio options. The Keyboard options give you the ability to assign new shortcuts for just about everything. Type in "ghost" as shown below and select "Weigelt.GhostDoc.AddIn.DocumentThis". Select the "Press shortcut keys" textbox and type in the shortcut you want. You'll want to use the new shortcut in the Text Editor as shown. Your new shortcut is now just an "Assign" away.

You can use this to mess with any shortcuts you like, but keep in mind a few things:

  • If you customise things too much you're going to have trouble if you move to a system which doesn't have your customisations.
  • If anyone else uses your system they're may have trouble with your configuration. This could impact your ability to seek help from your coworkers.
  • The shortcuts you pick may conflict with other Visual Studio add-ins or new shortcuts in new Visual Studio versions.
